When you decide to get dental implants to fill in your incomplete smile, you understand that it is an involved and surgically invasive process that will require some recovery time. But what exactly can you expect from this recovery, and what symptoms should you be aware of if a dental implant fails due to rejection by your body? Patients in the Scottsdale, Arizona area who get dental implants at AZ Dental Wellness trust the advice and recovery instructions provided by Dr. Rogel Carlos. Dr. Carlos provides each patient with straightforward, easy-to-understand recovery instructions and is available for any questions following a dental implant procedure.

What to Expect After Dental Implant Surgery

Due to the surgically invasive nature of a dental implant procedure, recovery is a process. You will have been under anesthesia during the procedure, so you will need a ride home while you continue to come around immediately following the procedure. You will likely experience some pain and discomfort for at least 48 hours following the procedure, during which you will experience a few symptoms that should not be viewed as complications from the surgery. These include:

  • Bleeding of the gums for anywhere from 48 to 72 hours
  • Swelling of the face around the cheeks, mouth, and eyes
  • Pain and discomfort for around 48 to 72 hours

To ease any discomfort, your dentist/surgeon may recommend an OTC pain medication or could prescribe you pain medication. The stitches used during the procedure should dissolve within a few days but could take up to two weeks. After a week has passed following the surgery, the pain and swelling should have subsided, and your mouth will begin to feel a bit more normal.

Signs There Are Complications

If your implant is failing, here are some symptoms that could surface:

  • You experience severe pain during the healing process. While mild to moderate discomfort is normal, severe pain is not.
  • Your gums begin to recede around the implant.
  • You are having difficulty biting down and chewing. You should never experience this, as implants are meant to function like a natural tooth.
  • Your implant is shifting or has become loose.

If you experience any of these symptoms, call your dentist or oral surgeon immediately. To learn more about dental implants, please call AZ Dental Wellness today at (480) 405-1511.
